Funding Trends 2023: Tracking Grantmaking in Marine Area-based Conservation
Global foundation funding for marine area-based conservation (MABC), including marine protected areas (MPAs), has nearly tripled over the past decade, to $122 million in 2022, a report from Our Shared Seas finds. A project funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and Oceankind, Our Shared Seas analyzed grants data gathered directly from the 80 largest marine philanthropic funders, in addition to Candid and other sources. According to the report, Funding Trends 2023: Tracking Grantmaking in Marine Area-based Conservation (27 pages, PDF), the top MABC funders between 2010 and 2022 included the Gordon and Betty Moore, Packard, Walton Family foundations, and funders have increasingly sought to support conservation efforts in the Global South to facilitate a more equitable distribution of funding. Meeting the target of protecting 30 percent of the ocean by 2030, however, will require an estimated $9 billion to $12 billion in annual funding—a more than tripling in the protection of marine areas in seven years. The report includes case studies of illustrating lessons learned and emerging insights from MABC projects around the world.
