How does poverty affect people’s mental and physical health?

A data brief from USAFacts synthesizes data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services as well as the 2021 Surgeon General report to highlight how living in poverty is associated with poor mental and physical health outcomes. According to the brief, How does poverty affect people’s mental and physical health?, 19.4 percent of people with incomes below the federal poverty line (FPL) reported feelings of worry, nervousness, or anxiety, compared with 15.4 percent of those with incomes between 100 percent and 200 percent of FPL and 11.1 percent of those with incomes above 200 percent of FPL. A CDC report also found that people living in poverty also increases risks for chronic diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, and stroke, as well as developmental delays, toxic stress, and nutritional deficits in children.
