Philanthropic Support to Address HIV and AIDS in 2021

HIV-related giving by philanthropic organizations in 2021—data on 5,640 grants, awarded by 187 foundations to 131 countries—totaled $692 million, a decline of $9 million, or 1 percent, from 2020, a report from Funders Concerned About AIDS finds. Funded by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Gilead Sciences, Inc., and the Levi Strauss Foundation, the report, Philanthropic Support to Address HIV and AIDS in 2021 (65 pages, PDF), found that despite general operating support being the most requested need, general operating support totaled $45 million, a $9 million (17 percent) drop, representing just 7 percent of overall HIV-related philanthropy. Support for capacity building and leadership development increased to $69 million, up 5 percent; funding for advocacy, including human rights-related strategies, reached $150 million, up 15 percent and continuing an upward trend; and funding focused on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color ) communities in the United States reached a record $58 million in 2021, a 39 percent increase, following a 37 percent jump in 2020.
