The systemic reforms and investments needed to provide African-American boys and men with a fair and substantive opportunity to learn and improve their outcomes must be accelerated, a report from the Schott Foundation for Public Education argues. The Urgency of Now: The Schott 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males (56 pages, PDF) examined high school graduation rates by race/ethnicity and found that, despite some progress, wide gaps persist between African-American (52 percent nationwide) and Latino (58 percent) males and their white peers (78 percent). Funded by the Heinz Endowments and the J.P. Morgan Chase, W.K. Kellogg, and Lumina foundations, the report calls for a support-based — rather than standards-driven — reform agenda that strategically aligns the resources needed to give every student the opportunity to achieve.
