Between 2010 and 2012, three hundred and nineteen U.S. foundations awarded grants totaling $1.7 billion to nonprofit organizations in Latin America and groups in the U.S. and elsewhere with international programs targeting the region, a report from Foundation Center, Hispanics in Philanthropy, and the Seattle International Foundation finds. According to the report, U.S. Foundation Funding: Latin America, 2010 to 2012 (8 pages, PDF), grants for Latin America accounted for 9.8 percent of all international grant dollars awarded by U.S. foundations during the period. Led by the Walton Family, Bill & Melinda Gates, and David and Lucile Packard foundations, grants awarded directly to organizations in Latin America (for work in Latin America or elsewhere) totaled $456.8 million, or 6.7 percent of all cross-border giving by U.S. foundations, while the Conservation Land Trust, the Tinker Foundation, and the Gilead Foundation topped the list of organizations giving the most in support of the region as a percentage of their overall giving.
