2013 Guggenheim Fellowship Winners Announced

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship Awards in the United States and Canada.

Selected from nearly 3,000 applicants, the 175 scholars, artists, and scientists who received fellowships represent 56 disciplines, 85 academic institutions, 30 states, and three Canadian provinces. As in previous years, 35 fellows who are not affiliated with universities or hold adjunct or part-time positions received supplemental support from the Leon Levy Foundation, while the Dorothy Tapper Goldman Foundation provided funding for the fellowship in constitutional studies, which this year was awarded to Kristen Stilt. In addition, the estate of Carl Gans, himself a Guggenheim Fellow (1953 and 1977), helped fund fellowships in Organismic Biology and Ecology, which this year were awarded to Tom Daniel of the University of Washington and Jessica Green of the University of Oregon and Santa Fe Institute.

Fellowship winners include Philippe Bourgois, a professor of anthropology and family and community medicine at the University of Pennsylvania; Kimsooja, an artist based in New York, Paris, and Seoul, whose work combines performance, video, and installation; Julia Reinhard Lupton, a professor of English at the University of California, Irvine; Natalie Mahowald, an associate professor of atmospheric sciences at Cornell University; Brett Walker, a professor of history at Montana State University, Bozeman; and the writers Kiran Desai, Joshua Foer, J. C. Hallman, Bill Hayes, Adam Johnson, Rachel Kushner, Ben Marcus, David Means, Sylvia Nasar, Carlin Romano, David Rosenberg, Terese Svoboda, and Colson Whitehead.

Since its establishment in 1925, the Guggenheim Foundation has granted over $306 million in fellowships to more than 17,500 individuals. For a complete list of this year's fellowship recipients by field, visit the Guggenheim Foundation Web site.
