$450 million pledged to phase-down of non-CO² super climate pollutants
A coalition of leading climate philanthropies has announced a three-year, $450 million commitment to accelerate the phase-down of methane and other non-CO² super climate pollutants.
Announced during the World Climate Action Summit (COP28) in Dubai, the funds will support efforts to catalyze the reduction of super pollutants by helping expedite the implementation of national action plans and achieve ambitious economy-wide, nationally determined contributions (NDCs) that incorporate all climate pollutants. Most of the funding will be directed toward methane abatement, with remaining funds supporting the phase-out of fluorinated gases, nitrous oxide, black carbon, and ground-level ozone. In addition, the commitment will help leverage resources to triple current levels of climate finance with respect to non-CO² pollutants by 2030.
Funding partners include Ballmer Group, the Bezos Earth Fund, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, and the High Tide, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur, Larsen Lam Climate Change, Pisces, Quadrature Climate, Sequoia, and William and Flora Hewlett foundations. Individual commitments were not disclosed.
“Governments have an opportunity here to strengthen their targets and goals to ensure they address the mitigation and funding levels climate science demands,” said Sequoia Climate Foundation president Christie Ulman. “Stronger targets combined with a renewed focus on implementation are critical—it’s the only way we will see our climate goals realized.”
