Adelsons Donate $25 Million to Yad Vashem
American philanthropist Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam, have given $25 million to the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem, doubling their 2006 gift to the museum, the Jerusalem Post and Jewish Telegraphic Agency report.
The combined gift from the Adelsons — Sheldon Adelson, 78, is an American casino and hotel magnate whose net worth is estimated by Forbes to be more than $21 billion — is the largest ever private gift to Yad Vashem. According to the Post, the gifts from the Adelsons have made it possible for thousands of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish educators from Spain, Greece, Hungary, Serbia, China, Morocco, Russia, and other countries to learn about the Holocaust.
"We have seen the incredible impact of Yad Vashem seminars on educators of all backgrounds over the past five years," said Adelson. "We look to these educators to bring the lessons of the Shoah (Holocaust) to their students."
In addition, the Adelsons doubled their support, to $10 million, for the Taglit-Birthright Israel program, which provides diaspora Jews between the ages of 18 and 26 with a free trip to Israel.
