Alwaleed Philanthropies Awards $1 Million for Sri Lankan Flood Relief
Alwaleed Philanthropies has announced a gift of $1 million to provide support to the victims of flooding and landslides in Sri Lanka that have left dozens of people dead and hundreds of thousands displaced from their homes.
Although Sri Lanka typically experiences severe monsoons and flooding during its rainy season, the devastation from the recent storms was unusually early and fierce. The funds from Alawaleed Philanthropies will support relief efforts through the foundation’s partnerships with the UN World Food Programme, Habitat for Humanity, and International Medical Corps.
"This crisis reinforces just how important this week’s discussions are at the World Humanitarian Summit," said Nauf AlRawaf, executive manager of global initiatives at the foundation. "One of the core aims of the summit is to enable countries and communities to better prepare for and respond to crises just like this one in Sri Lanka."
