AmeriCares Sends $2.2 Million in Medical Aid to Philippines
Humanitarian aid organization AmeriCares has announced a $2.2 million medical aid package for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
The shipment of supplies — AmeriCares largest to date for Typhoon Haiyan survivors — includes antibiotics, nutritional supplements, and medications for patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and severe arthritis. The medicines are headed to clinics and hospitals throughout the storm-damaged region.
To date, AmeriCares has shipped more than $5 million in medical and relief supplies to regions affected by the November disaster. The group has been delivering aid to the Philippines since 1985 and supports an established network of a hundred and fifty healthcare facilities across the country, allowing it to quickly deploy staff and emergency aid to disaster survivors.
"Healthcare facilities throughout the region are running critically low on essential medicines needed to treat disaster survivors," said AmeriCares vice president of emergency response Garrett Ingoglia. "With this shipment we are helping patients with chronic health problems access their medications, as well as ensuring medical professionals can treat disaster-related illnesses."
