Art Institute of Chicago Announces $70 Million in Gifts

The Art Institute of Chicago has announced gifts totaling $70 million from Janet and Craig Duchossois and Robert and Diane von Schlegell Levy.

The gifts include a $50 million unrestricted gift from the Duchossoises — the largest cash gift in the museum's history — and $20 million from the Levys in support of acquisitions and operations. The gifts will enable the museum to advance its civic mission and plan for the future.

"Craig and I chose to make this unrestricted gift to demonstrate our confidence and support of James Rondeau and the board," said Janet Duchossois, a voting member of the AIC board of trustees and chair of its Sustaining Fellows. "We are proud to be partners in their strategy and approach for the museum both today and in the future."

"We have a strong and committed board of trustees, dedicated to our role as an active civic partner, accessible to all members of our community," said Robert Levy, board chair of the museum and president of the Robert M. Levy and Diane v.S. Levy Family Foundation. "This extraordinary gift from Janet and Craig is critical to fulfilling the museum's mission and enhancing our visitors' experiences."

James Rondeau, president and Eloise W. Martin Director of the museum, told the Chicago Tribune that while there are no specific immediate plans for the funds, "Our ambitions are always scaled to our resources....New resources allow for new ambitions. I think what we're thinking about, along with Bob and Diane and with Janet and Craig, is that these gifts are allowing us to now start to conceive what our future might look like, rather than specifically funding an existing plan."
