Atlassian co-founder and wife pledge $1.1 billion for climate action
Atlassian co-founder and co-CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes and his wife, Annie, are committing AU$1.5 billion ($1.1 billion) in support of efforts to address climate change, Fortune reports.
The commitment includes AU$1 billion ($749.5 million) in climate-conscious investments and AU$500 million ($349.8 million) to nonprofits fighting climate change, including Beyond Zero Emissions, Climate Council, and Rewiring Australia. Cannon-Brookes told Fortune that he hopes this sets an example for the role that corporate leaders and major corporations need to play in working toward a climate solution.
In addition, Atlassian, which pledged in 2019 to reach net zero emissions by 2050, has moved its target date up to 2040. "We've outperformed all our targets to date on our corporate net-zero renewable energy goals," Cannon-Brookes said of the software company.
"Individuals and businesses and governments all need to come together in big ways," he said. Given "the urgency with which we need both investments and philanthropic things to happen...we need it to happen between now and the next eight years."
