AVPN awards $3 million for climate-related projects in Asia
The Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) has announced 13 grants totaling $3 million in support of climate change-related projects across the Asia-Pacific region.
Announced during the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Southeast Asia Development Symposium in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, the grants are part of the Asia Pacific Sustainability Seed Fund, an AVPN partnership with Google.org and ADB. They will enable recipients to deploy sustainable tech-driven innovations to address climate change at the local level. The region's low-lying and small island countries are especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change such as extreme weather and heat, rising sea levels, and the loss of biodiversity.
Recipients include Alam Sehat Lestari, which supports community-designed solutions to preserve rainforests and fight deforestation in Indonesian Borneo; Azure Alliance, which promotes water maintenance projects using autonomous vehicles to remove debris from waterways; the Border Green Energy Team Foundation, which supports access to renewable energy for rural villages along the Thailand-Myanmar border; and the Coalition for Our Common Future, which uses information technology to achieve carbon neutral and sustainable economic development. In addition, grants were awarded to Engineering Good, Gujarat Mahila Housing Sewa Trust, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, Ocean Recovery Alliance, TGECA, Uncharted Waters, Villgro Innovation Foundation, Water Stewardship Asia Pacific, and Yayasan Solar Chapter Indonesia.
“Local impact organizations are developing innovative climate actions using technology like AI, which combined with their on-ground expertise, is evolving sustainability practices that are…tailored to the unique needs of markets in the Asia Pacific region,” said AVPN Indonesian country director Dini Indrawati. “Funding is…vital to ensure they continue their work to combat climate change and secure the future of the region.”
