Barr Foundation awards third-quarter grants totaling $30.9 million

The Boston-based Barr Foundation has announced third-quarter grants totaling $30.9 million in support of organizations working in the areas of climate change, education, sector effectiveness, and the arts.

Through its Arts & Creativity program, the foundation awarded four grants totaling more than $1 million, including $680,000 to MASSCreative to relaunch the Create the Vote initiative to increase the grassroots organizing capacity and inform policy making in the arts and cultural sector in Massachusetts. Through its Climate program, the foundation awarded fifty grants totaling $13.5 million, including general operating support grants totaling $2.6 million for members of the Green Justice Coalition, which includes the Chinatown People Progressive Association, Coalition for Social Justice-Education Fund, Community Labor United, GreenRoots, Massachusetts Senior Action Council, and Neighbor to Neighbor Massachusetts Education Fund.

In the Education category, the foundation awarded twenty-six grants totaling $11.3 million, including $1.2 million to the Education Trust (Ed Trust) to provide core support for the Ed Trust team in Massachusetts to convene and support the Massachusetts Education Equity Partnership; and $550,000 to Friends of Veritas Preparatory Charter School in support of the final design year and launch of Veritas High School.

In addition, in the Sector Effectiveness category, the foundation awarded twenty-three grants totaling $3 million; four of which provide multiyear, general operating support to Boston Municipal Research Bureau, Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center, Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, and the Massachusetts Institute for a New Commonwealth.
