Bezos family commits $166 million to NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn
NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn has announced a $166 million commitment from the family of Jeff Bezos in support of efforts to enhance the health and wellness of diverse populations.
The commitment will enable the hospital and the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone to create a dynamic model for communitywide health improvement in the Sunset Park community that will address social determinants of health and key drivers of health inequities. According to NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn, the challenge of delivering the highest-quality health care to all while also addressing the context of health is starkly evident in poor and underserved communities, where access to excellent medical care is often lacking and health and well-being are affected by a confluence of social and environmental inequities.
The gift follows a $25 million commitment from the Bezos Family Foundation in 2017 to support major initiatives to help mothers, children, and families in southwest Brooklyn, where the hospital provides care for a diverse immigrant population, bolstered by its partnership network with key social service agencies and community-based providers.
“Four years ago, through the Bezos Family Foundation, we invested in NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn to help support the families of Sunset Park and bring them access to higher-quality care,” said Bezos Family Foundation vice president Mike Bezos. “Today, in the midst of a pandemic that has accentuated the need for more comprehensive health supports, our family wishes to deepen our personal commitment to the community and to NYU Langone Health’s efforts in Brooklyn.”
