Broad Foundation Awards $3 Million to Common Sense Media
The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation has announced a $3 million grant to Common Sense Media in support of the organization’s efforts to expand its online platform for teachers.
Launched in August, the Graphite platform provides ratings and reviews of nearly a thousand digital learning tools that can be used in the classroom. Teachers can sort reviews by type of technology, subject, grade level, price, and technology requirements. Ratings focus on how well a tool teaches a lesson or skill, while also taking into account whether it holds student interest and provides support for teachers. The reviews are accompanied by practical “field notes” provided by more than a hundred and thirty thousand registered Common Sense Media educators.
The grant from Broad will support the addition of new features to the platform, including a forum where teachers can connect with other teachers and parents; the creation of a library of free lesson plans for teachers who have or are implementing digital tools in the classroom; and the development of a mobile version.
“With the generous support of the Broad Foundation, Common Sense Media is furthering its mission to help educators and students harness the power of technology for learning,” said Common Sense Media founder and CEO Jim Steyer. “This next evolution of Graphite will make it an even more powerful resource for teachers to discover, share, and use the best digital tools for teaching, elevate their practice and transform learning for millions of kids.”
