BWF Names Recipients of 2016 Career Awards at Scientific Interface

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund in Research Park Triangle, North Carolina, has announced awards totaling $5 million to the 2016 recipients of its Career Awards at the Scientific Interface.

Ten postdoctoral researchers working at the intersection of the biological and physical sciences will each receive $500,000 over five years to help them transition from postdoctoral training into faculty research careers in the fields of engineering, chemistry, math, and physical and computational science. Recipients also will receive job placement assistance, mentoring, and professional networking opportunities.

This year’s recipients include Ahmet F. Coskun of the California Institute of Technology; Alexander G. Huth of the University of California, Berkeley; Ashley M. Laughney Bakhoum of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; Michael John Mitchell of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Arthur Prindle of the University of California, San Diego; Adrianne Marie Rosales of the University of Colorado Boulder; David Michael Schneider of Duke University; Amy Wesolowski and Jing Yan of Princeton University; and Weijian Yang of Columbia University.

"These cross-trained scientists will play a vital role in advancing human health, because their dual understanding of biological and physical sciences or engineering enables them to visualize new tools, lenses, and machinery previously unimaginable," said BWF president John E. Burris. "Of all our research investment programs at the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, this award comes closest toward bridging science fiction with reality — and we can't wait to see all the ideas and breakthroughs these researchers will contribute to the biomedical world as their careers unfold."
