California Community Foundation awards $7.8 million to summer programs

The California Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $7.8 million in support of 108 summer and expanded learning programs through its LA County Summer Learning Initiative.

Launched in 2020 to address the physical closures of Los Angeles County schools and community centers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program supports learning and enrichment programs for low-income and vulnerable students in transitional kindergarten (TK) through12th grade schools. Recipients include the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles in support of summer camps that provide academic support, learning recovery, and expanded social emotional learning; and the philanthropic arm of the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) to help boost staff capacity.

Grants are supported in part by a $3.3 million commitment from Ballmer Group, a $1.2 million pledge from the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, and a $1 million commitment from the Murphy Family Fund.

“CCF and our partners have collectively given more than $16.6 million in funding support to schools and community-based organizations across LA County to ensure that students during summer and beyond had access to critical services in response to the pandemic,” said CCF president and CEO Antonia Hernández. “We are proud of the impact we have had to more than 248,000 students over the last three years through the LA County Summer Learning Initiative.”
