Carnegie Corporation names 2023 cohort of distinguished immigrants
The Carnegie Corporation of New York has announced its fifth annual list of distinguished immigrants to the United States whose experiences have enriched and strengthened American society.
The 2023 cohort honors 35 naturalized citizens from 33 countries with a wide range of backgrounds, career paths, and contributions to their adopted country. This year’s honorees include two Nobel Prize laureates, an Olympian, a member of Congress, an advocate for diversity in technology and artificial intelligence, a university president, a public theologian and immigration advocate, a social and cultural historian, and celebrities such as Elle magazine editor-in-chief and TV personality Nina Garcia, bestselling novelist Min Jin Lee, seven-time Grammy Award winner Alanis Morissette, actor Pedro Pascal, and Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan.
Established in 1911 by Andrew Carnegie—himself an immigrant from Scotland—the foundation has long supported the integration of immigrants into the fabric of American society through a portfolio of grantees focused on policy reform and efforts to encourage eligible immigrants to become citizens. Since 2006, the corporation has named more than 700 Great Immigrants, forming one of the largest online databases of its type.
“The Great Immigrants initiative is a tribute to the legacy of Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant who, like these honorees, found success in America, contributed enormously to his adopted country, and inspired others to do the same,” said corporation president Dame Louise Richardson. “The 35 naturalized citizens honored today embody that tradition, reminding us that the contributions of immigrants make our country more vibrant and our democracy more resilient.”
