Cedarville University Receives $10 Million From Alumnus

Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio, has announced a $10 million gift from alumnus Mark Scharnberg (’97) in honor of his father, Lorne C. Scharnberg.

The largest gift in the Christian university's history was made on behalf of the Scharnberg family and their Iowa-based family businesses, Katecho and Surmasis Pharmaceuticals. In recognition of the gift, a proposed business center, one of six building projects slated for construction over the next ten years, will be named after Lorne Scharnberg.

In 1984, Scharnberg and his wife, Kathi, founded Katecho, a medical manufacturing business. They later founded Surmasis Pharmaceuticals, a contract pharmaceutical manufacturer, where Kathi Scharnberg served as chief financial officer until her death in 2018. Lorne Scharnberg served on Cedarville's board of trustees for twenty-five years and recently received a Cedarville medal of honor.

"What an honor to be a part of providing a facility that will equip future business owners, entrepreneurs, and professionals to use their career as a platform for ministry," said Mark Scharnberg. "This is how my father has lived his life, and we are thrilled to continue his legacy through this gift to Cedarville."
