Chicago's Cultural Treasures awards $14.4 million for BIPOC arts

The Joyce Foundation has announced grants totaling $14.4 million to forty organizations that are contributing to the history, culture, vibrancy, and identity of communities of color in the greater Chicago region.

Awarded through the the Chicago's Cultural Treasures initiative, a four-year effort launched in December 2020 with funding from Joyce as well as the Ford, MacArthur, Polk Bros, and Walder foundations, the Terra Foundation for American Art, and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, grants will support organizations working to create, preserve, and disseminate art that stems from BIPOC traditions, leadership, and culture. In addition, the initiative will provide capacity-building and technical assistance.

Recipients were awarded grants ranging from between $140,000 and $575,000, including Africa International House USA, the American Indian Center, Chicago Blues Museum, Chicago West Community Music Center, DuSable Museum of African American History, Mexican Folk Dance Company of Chicago, Muntu Dance Theatre, Natya Dance Theatre, Sones de Mexico, South Shore Drill Team, and West Point School of Music/Epic Steel.
