Citi Foundation awards $25 million for social and economic opportunity
Citi Foundation has announced grants totaling $25 million in support of efforts to advance social and economic opportunity for underserved communities in six U.S. cities.
The foundation’s Community Progress Makers initiative awarded unrestricted grants of $500,000 each to fifty organizations in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Washington, D.C., working in the areas of affordable housing and access, environmental sustainability, economic development, financial health and wellness, and workforce readiness and high-quality jobs. Each grant recipient also will have access to technical assistance and a supportive learning community over the next two years.
Recipients include Central City Neighborhood Partners (Los Angeles), Centro Community Partners (San Francisco), Community Justice Project (Miami), El Puente (New York City), Enterprise Community Partners (Los Angeles), the Homeless Children’s Network (San Francisco), the Korean American Community Foundation (New York City), Solar and Energy Loan Fund (Miami), and Urban Growers Collective (Chicago).
Launched in 2015, the Community Progress Makers initiative awarded $40 million in multiyear, unrestricted funding to seventy-two nonprofits. The $25 million expansion of the initiative this year is part of Citi and the Citi Foundation’s Action for Racial Equity initiative, which has invested $1 billion in initiatives to help close the racial wealth gap in the United States.
“This flexible support from the Citi Foundation is transformative for our organization and illustrates a trust and confidence in our leadership and vision as we advocate for equitable greenspace in South Williamsburg,” said El Puente executive director Marco A. Carrión. “El Puente is honored to be part of this new phase of Community Progress Makers and to work alongside other leading community organizations that share in our mission to increase access and opportunity for underserved populations.”
