Clara Lionel Foundation commits $15 million to environmental groups

The Clara Lionel Foundation has announced it is partnering with #StartSmall, the philanthropic initiative of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, to commit $15 million in support of 18 grassroots organizations fighting climate change across the United States and the Caribbean.

Awarded to organizations focused on and led by women, youth, LGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, the grants will help accelerate climate justice efforts for those at greatest risk. A group of climate justice leaders and organizers is working in seven Caribbean countries and nearly all 50 states. Recipients include the Black Feminist Fund ($5 million), Center for Popular Democracy ($2.5 million), Climate Justice Alliance ($200,000), and Hive Fund for Gender and Climate Justice ($500,000).

“At the Clara Lionel Foundation, much of the work is rooted in the understanding that climate disasters, which are growing in frequency and intensity, do not impact all communities equally, with communities of color and island nations facing the brunt of climate change” said Clara Lionel Foundation founder Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty. “This is why CLF prioritizes both climate resilience and climate justice work across the U.S. and Caribbean.”
