Clark University receives $6 million from alumna for music education
Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, has announced a $6 million bequest from alumna Tina Sweeney ('49) in support of music education.
The gift from Sweeney, who died in April 2020 at the age of 92, will endow the Tina Sweeney, M.A. '49 Endowed Chair in Music in support of a distinguished faculty member; create the Tina Sweeney, M.A. '49 Scholarship for undergraduate students majoring in or planning to major in music; establish the Tina Sweeney, M.A. '49 Clark University Neighborhood Children's Music Fund, which will sponsor activities and programs that promote music education and exposure for children in the Main South neighborhood; and fund the Tina Sweeney, M.A. '49 Music Concert Series for the Clark community. Sweeney also designated funds retroactively toward construction of the university's Jennie and Arthur Razzo Hall, named in honor of her parents.
Sweeney, who received her master's degree in history from Clark, had an eclectic career that included stints as a television producer and as a counselor for the New York Department of Corrections.
"She often expressed her gratitude for receiving a financial package that allowed her to attend Clark and sparked a deep and abiding appreciation for the university and its mission," Clark University president David Fithian said. "We eagerly anticipate opening new avenues of engagement with our community and providing fresh educational and performing opportunities at Clark."
