Alabama

The Community Foundation of East Alabama in Opelika has launched a Lee County Tornado Recovery Fund, through which it will help meet the unmet emergency needs of Lee County residents who suffered property damage and/or dislocation due to the deadly tornadoes that swept through the area last weekend, leaving twenty-three dead.

Arizona

The Arizona Community Foundation has announced that Kathie J. Gummere will chair the steering committee of its Center for LGBTQ Philanthropy. An attorney in private practice who specializes in estate planning, particularly for gays and lesbians and unmarried couples, Gummere is a former political consultant and lobbyist for the Arizona Human Rights Fund, now known as Equality Arizona. She also serves on the National Family Law Advisory Council for the National Center for Lesbian Rights and is a member of the Family Law Institute of the LGBT Bar Association.

California

The Calaveras Community Foundation in Angels Camp has announced a gift of $10,000 from the Jackson Rancheria Band of Miwuk Indians. In addition, employees of the Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort are making individual donations to CCF via payroll deductions.

Massachusetts

The Cape Cod Foundation has announced that its eighty scholarship funds for graduating seniors, including five that are new this year, are open to applicants. The foundation also announced that there are scholarship opportunities available for adults interested in pursuing a degree, completing a certificate program, or taking a professional development course. The application process for scholarships is entirely online, with the deadline for applications for most scholarships midnight on April 1.

New Jersey

The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation has announced the selection of artist Damien Mitchell to create a public mural for Creative Hackensack's "Demarest Place Walkway Mural" in downtown Hackensack. Comprised of representatives from the Main Street Business Alliance, the Hackensack Creative Arts Team, the City of Hackensack, the arts community, and the community-at-large, the selection committee choose Mitchell after a competitive call to artists for original designs featuring one of four themes based on input from the public — A Tribute to Hackensack's Rich Music/Jazz History, the Lenni Lenape Indians, Key Events in Hackensack's History, or a Contemporary Theme of the Artist's Choice. Originally from Wagga Wagga in Australia, Mitchell has created murals in several locations, including Hartford, Connecticut, and Frankfurt, Germany.

North Carolina

The Carteret Community Foundation in Morehead City, an affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation, has announced $56,250 in recovery grants through the NCCF Disaster Relief Fund in support of long-term recovery efforts in response to Hurricane Florence. Recipients include Cape Carteret Baptist Church, Family Promise of Carteret County, Hope Mission of Carteret County, and the local Salvation Army.

Ohio

The Akron Community Foundation has announced that its Gay Community Endowment Fund has awarded sixteen grants totaling more than $55,000 to area nonprofits and has surpassed $500,000 in total grantmaking since it was established in 2001. Recipients of the most recent round of grants include CANAPI, the Battered Women's Shelter, OutSupport, and PFLAG Akron.

Oregon

The Benton Community Foundation is accepting nominations for its inaugural Philanthropy Achievement Awards, which will be awarded on November 15, National Philanthropy Day, the Corvallis Gazette-Times reports. Awards will be presented in seven categories: volunteer fundraiser, volunteer group, philanthropic business, emerging philanthropist, fundraising professional, innovative project or program, and the BCF Board of Directors’ Award for Outstanding Philanthropic Achievement.

Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Foundation has announced grants and scholarships totaling more than $125,000 through its Black Philanthropy Bannister Fund, which supports nonprofits working in the areas of youth development and mentoring, the history and achievement of African Americans in Rhode Island, cultural preservation, and outreach to low-income African-American residents of the state. Recipients include AS220, the Capital Good Fund, New Urban Arts, and the Refuge Dream Center.
