Community Foundation Update (03/12/2022)
Arizona
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona in Tucson has announced the addition of Rose Snyder and Lahsha Brown to its staff. Snyder is the coordinator of the Center for Healthy Nonprofits in the Community Investments Department, while Brown is a grants finance associate in the Finance Department.
California
The City of San Diego has announced grants totaling $6 million as part of its Small Business and Nonprofit Relief Fund program in partnership with the San Diego Foundation. In total, the city and foundation have provided relief to 1,514 small businesses and 166 nonprofit organizations hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Recipients include Casa Familiar, ElderHelp of San Diego, Nile Sisters Development Initiative, and Wesley House Student Residence.
The Santa Barbara Foundation has announced the appointment of Tammy Sims Johnson as vice president of philanthropic services. A longtime nonprofit executive, Johnson most recently served as senior philanthropic advisor at the California Community Foundation.
Kansas
The Hutchinson Community Foundation has announced that its Youth Philanthropy Council awarded eight grants totaling $5,000 from the Richard W. Dillon Memorial Fund. Recipients include Boys & Girls Clubs of Hutchinson, Bright House, United Way of Reno County, and Wiley Elementary School.
Massachusetts
The Cambridge Community Foundation (CCF) has distributed $228,500 in grants to 17 community-based organizations serving low-income and/or immigrant populations in Cambridge, Somerville, and Medford. Funded with support from the Massachusetts Executive Office for Housing and Economic Development (EOHED) & Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) Community Foundations Grant Program for COVID-19 Relief and additional funds from CCF donors, the grants range from $11,000 to $15,000 and include support for urgent needs such as food security, housing and homelessness prevention, emergency child care, utilities, transportation, and technology for remote school or work. Recipients include Bridges Homeward, East End House, Just a Start Corporation, and the Welcome Project.
Minnesota
The Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation and two of its partner foundations, the F.R. Bigelow Foundation and Mardag Foundation, have announced that they have collectively awarded more than $7 million to Minnesota nonprofits in their first round of 2022 grantmaking. Grants will support community organizations as they rebuild in the wake of COVID-19 and civil unrest. Recipients include Anna Marie’s Alliance, Standpoint, Restoration for All, and RISE.
Nebraska
The Omaha Community Foundation has announced a new strategic framework focused on expanding its relationships with nonprofits and fundholders with the goal of maximizing its internal expertise and technological resources to guide local philanthropic investments. Over the next three years, the foundation will focus on investing in internal capacity, leading and engaging the community, and connecting stakeholders with purpose.
New York
The Rochester Area Community Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) have announced a partnership aimed at infusing local arts programs with new funding. The council has awarded $430,000 to Rochester Area Community Foundation Initiatives, an arm of the foundation, with the majority of funding earmarked for one-time grants in support of nonprofit and public projects. Grants of $5,000 each will be awarded to increase audience reach, organizational capacity, and equitable access to program support. Organizations that have received funding from NYSCA since 2018 are not eligible, and the deadline to apply is April 29.
Ohio
The Akron Community Foundation has announced that its Gay Community Endowment Fund awarded 16 grants totaling $60,000 in support of programs that enhance the quality of life of Greater Akron’s LGBTQ+ community. For the fourth consecutive year, the fund awarded impact grants to programs that create safer environments for LGBTQ+ youth, address the LGBTQ+ community’s concerns, and support mental health and suicide prevention programs for LGBTQ+ people. Recipients include the Bayard Rustin LGBTQ+ Resource Center, the Buckeye Flame, CANAPI, and OutSupport.
West Virginia
The Parkersburg Area Community Foundation has announced a free interactive workshop for nonprofit leaders—including staff, board members, and key volunteers—working for the betterment of Lewis County that will guide attendees through valuable resources including grant writing tips and a nonprofit needs assessment. Organized and presented by the Lewis County Community Foundation, the workshop will be held at Stonewall Resort, on Tuesday, April 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. During the interactive workshop, the Lewis County Community Foundation Fund and the Pallottine Foundation will share information on grant funding opportunities for area nonprofits, and the West Virginia Nonprofit Association will lead participants in assessing their individual organizational needs.
