Alaska
The Juneau Community Foundation has announced nearly $2.5 million in grants to local nonprofit organizations and programs. Since 2015, the Juneau Hope Endowment/CBJ Social Service Grant process has provided more than $17 million in grants to support areas of greatest need. This year, almost half the funding is focused on preventing and assisting those experiencing homelessness. Recipients include the Glory Hall/Housing First, Gastineau Human Services, Family Promise of Juneau, and Shéiyi X̱aat Hit.
Arizona
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA) in Tucson has announced grants totaling more than $1.2 million to 51 organizations to help them maximize their impact and improve the quality of life in the region. CFSA’s 2023 CORE Grants were made possible with the support of CORE Donor Collaborators, CFSA Field of Interest Funds, and the Connie Hillman Family Foundation, along with the foundation’s CORE Community Review Committee. Recipients include Adult Literacy Plus of Southern Arizona, Border Youth Tennis Exchange, Coyote Task Force, and Lead Guitar.
California
The Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) has announced a $1 million endowed fund, the Alcario and Carmen Castellano/SVCF Community Fund, opened in partnership with the Castellano Family Foundation (CFF). The fund, established with $500,000 each from CFF and SVCF, is focused on supporting the power of Silicon Valley’s Latinx community and helping to continue CFF’s decades-long commitment to the Latinx community as it prepares to sunset operations.
Connecticut
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced an 18-month, $600,000 core support grant to the Hispanic Health Council. The grant will provide flexible resources in support of strategies to provide integrated health care through the organization’s Family Wellness Center, community-based services, research, and advocacy. Half of the grant was funded by the foundation’s Action Fund for Racial Justice, which was created in June 2021 to assist local organizations on the front lines of advancing racial justice. The Action Fund is a current-use fund designed to address immediate and ongoing community needs, and grants are awarded to nonprofits working to dismantle barriers to opportunity for communities of color, rebuild more equitable systems, and support those affected by systemic racism.
Florida
The Gulf Coast Community Foundation in Venice has announced that its evaluation of its Feeding Hungry Families initiative, conducted in collaboration with All Faiths Food Bank, has been published in a special issue of Local Development and Society on place-based philanthropic institutions and community development. The study evaluated the initiative, which was launched in 2014 with All Faiths Food Bank to collect local data, increase community awareness, and raise funds to meet the need. The Campaign Against Summer Hunger raised more than $1.2 million and provided 766,253 pounds of food in its first year, and the initiative has raised more than $14 million to date.
Maine
The Maine Community Foundation has announced the promotion of Laura Lee to vice president of community impact. Lee joined the foundation in 2015 as a program officer and previously was director of grantmaking. Based in the Portland office, she oversees the foundation’s grantmaking and community impact operations as well as its program team.
Minnesota
The Minneapolis Foundation has announced $3.4 million in grants to 81 local organizations that are working to advance racial and economic justice in the Twin Cities. In the past three years, the foundation has invested more than $10 million in community, leadership, and organizational strategies through its Racial and Economic Justice grant program. The latest recipients include Mni Sota Fund, Council on American-Islamic Relations MN, the African Development Center, and African Career, Education, and Resources.
North Carolina
The Hendersonville-based Community Foundation of Henderson County has announced that it is accepting nominations for its 2023 Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership and Dorothy “Dot” Dellinger Marlow Philanthropic Catalyst awards. The Sauer Award celebrates individuals who provide exceptional contributions and outstanding leadership through their personal philanthropic efforts in Henderson County, while the Marlow Award recognizes selfless leadership in charitable volunteer work. The deadline to apply is May 22.
Ohio
The Dayton Foundation has announced it is offering three additional nonprofit organizations in the region the opportunity to work with a Del Mar Encore Fellow, who can tackle a project that needs special skills or experience not currently available within an organization’s existing staff. Del Mar Encore Fellows are highly skilled, recently retired professionals, who bring a deep and broad skill set that can be deployed to work on high-priority community and organizational needs. Since 2017, the Dayton Foundation has deployed 17 older adults into the community to work as Del Mar Encore Fellows on significant community issues. The deadline to apply is May 22 at 4:00 p.m.
South Dakota
The South Dakota Community Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $2.8 million through the Gail and Delores Miller Foundation to statewide nonprofits in the Pierre, Fort Pierre, Lyman, and Jones County communities. Recipients include Black Hills Special Services Cooperative, City of Pierre-pickleball courts, Lutheran Memorial Church, and Western Dakota Technical College.
