Community Foundation Update (05/07/2022)

Arizona

The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA) in Tucson has announced CORE grants totaling more than $1.1 million in support of 55 nonprofits in Southern Arizona to provide the flexible working capital necessary to maximize their impact and improve the quality of life in the region. The largest single grant round in CFSA’s 42-year history included grants to Act One, the Border Youth Tennis Exchange, Sahuarita Food Bank, and the Drawing Studio.

California

The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has announced that nonprofits raised $13.4 million during the Big Day of Giving this week, bringing the total generated since the inception of the annual giving day to more than $78 million. Over 30,000 donors gave more than 50,000 gifts as part of the community-wide effort. Donations were received by each of the 718 nonprofits involved—the most to ever participate since the Big Day of Giving was launched in 2013.

Colorado

The Denver Foundation has announced that Erin Atwell has been appointed director of gifts and grants for the Finance & Accounting department and Priya Hariharan has joined as an accountant. Tara Friedman has been appointed senior director of engaged philanthropy. And Raquel Carrillo and Sophie Jonas have joined the foundation as administrative assistants of the impact group.

Connecticut

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced grants totaling more than $820,000 in support of summer learning programs. The grants will support 36 programs, including reduced-fee camperships as well as enrichment, tutorial, and counselor-in-training programs. The foundation’s summer program funding provides Hartford youth and those with disabilities from across the region with opportunities that come at low or no cost to their families. Recipients include Actup Theater, Camp Courant, Ebony Horsewomen, and the Hartford Public Library.

Kansas

The Hutchinson Community Foundation has announced that it will host a “big tent” event about housing and child care in the region. Representatives from the United Way of Reno County and Interfaith Housing & Community Services will explore the relationship between efforts to increase access to high-quality, affordable child care and housing in Hutchinson and Reno County. The event will take place at Abundant Life Childcare & Preschool, inside The Father’s House, on May 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The Central Kansas Community Foundation in Newton has announced its Women of the Year for 2022. A component fund of the foundation, the Newton Area Women of the Year program selects three women involved in community and civic service, education, religion, the arts, or business who have made a positive difference in the community. This year, the awardees are educator Susan Lamb, entrepreneur Tami Lakey, and health professional Sandie Kueker.

Kentucky

The Community Foundation of Louisville has announced that it awarded more than 11,000 grants totaling $64 million in 2021. The foundation awarded $7.6 million in support of arts, culture, and the humanities; $10.9 million in support of education; $25.6 million in support of health and human services; $9.6 million in support of community and environment; and $10.2 million in support of religion—with 78 percent of the funds awarded to local nonprofit organizations based in Kentucky and southern Indiana.

Massachusetts

The Cambridge Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $516,000 to 73 community-serving nonprofits in Cambridge, expanding the impact of its Community Fund grantmaking cycle with co-investments from fundholders who share the foundation’s concerns about the lingering effects of COVID-19 on families and supporting BIPOC communities in Cambridge. Recipients include Philanthropy Massachusetts, Friends of the Community Learning Center, the Young People’s Project, and Second Chances.

Minnesota

The Minneapolis Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $4.2 million to 86 organizations working to advance racial equity and economic justice in the Twin Cities. Recipients include the African American Leadership Forum, American Indian OIC, Pangea World Theater, and Voices of Racial Justice.
