Community Foundation Update (10/19/19)
California
The San Diego Foundation has announced grants totaling $364,000 to six organizations working to increase equity and strengthen regional resilience as it relates to diminishing water supplies due to the impacts of climate change. Awarded as part of the foundation's Climate Initiative, the grants will support the adoption of comprehensive, science-based action plans, efforts to advance resilience strategies, public awareness and civic engagement campaigns, and strategic initiatives designed to help the region meet its climate goals. Grant recipients include San Diego Coastkeeper, Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek, the Center on Policy Initiatives, and the Borrego Valley Stewardship Council.
Connecticut
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced a grant of $75,000 to Pitkin Playground, a nonprofit organization working to provide recreational opportunities to all children in East Hartford by equipping a section of the Pitkin Elementary School playground with rubberized flooring, fencing, a gazebo, and shading. The grant also enabled the organization to leverage an anonymous gift of $381,000 to meet the fundraising goal for the playground.
Kentucky
The Community Foundation of Louisville has announced the launch of a campaign led by the Louisville Youth Philanthropy Council to raise $125,000 toward construction of the Louisville Urban League Sports and Learning Complex. The parents of local teen Justin Durik jump-started the campaign by pledging to match gifts up to $125,000 from their fund at the community foundation for the complex. Durik told the foundation he was inspired to launch the campaign after seeing a video of west Louisville students running sprints in the halls of their high school because the surrounding area was too dangerous for them to train outdoors.
Missouri
The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation was named one of Kansas City's Best Places to Work in 2019 by the Kansas City Business Journal, which cited the foundation's benefits package as a reason for the accolade.
New Hampshire
The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation has announced grants totaling $289,435 from its Wellborn Ecology Fund in support of place-based ecology education programs across New Hampshire and Vermont's Upper Valley region. Grant recipients include Bradford Elementary School, the Center for Northern Woodlands Education, the Linking Lands Alliance, and the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. The fund also awarded a grant of $69,000 to the Upper Valley Teaching Place Collaborative, which includes leaders and content experts in place-based ecology education who work with educators and administrators. Since its inception in 2001, the fund has awarded grants totaling almost $6 million to more than a hundred and twenty-five nonprofit organizations and programs.
New Jersey
The Princeton Area Community Foundation has announced Fern and Larry Spruill as the winners of the 2019 Leslie "Bud" Vivian Award for Community Service. Established in 1995 in honor of the foundation's longtime director of community and regional affairs, the award is funded through the Vivian Memorial Fund. Longtime volunteers in the community, the Spruills have designated the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice and Not In Our Town Princeton to receive the cash grants that come with the honor. Not In Our Town will donate a portion of its grant to help fund a Washington, D.C., field trip for Princeton High School students who recently completed a Racial Literacy and Justice class.
New York
The Brooklyn Community Foundation has announced the addition of Aisha Moodie-Mills to its board of directors. A former president and CEO of the LGBTQ Victory Fund and Institute, Moodie-Mills also has served as a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, as executive director of the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, and as regional finance director at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
Ohio
The Dayton Foundation has announced a $500,000 grant in support of long-term recovery efforts following the Memorial Day tornadoes in the region and for victims of the mass shooting in the city's Oregon District in earl August. The grant includes $400,000 to the Greater Dayton Disaster Relief Fund and $100,000 to the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund in support of individuals who were physically injured and families of the victims who were killed in the shooting.
Washington, D.C.
The Greater Washington Community Foundation has announced the winners of the David Bradt Nonprofit Leadership Award. Selected from a group of nearly fifty applicants and nominations, the winners are Shannon Babe-Thomas (executive director, Community Bridges), Jorge Figueredo (executive director, Edu-Futuro), Lecester Johnson (CEO, Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School), and Markus Larsson (founder and executive director, Life Asset), each of home will receive a cash grant to invest in their professional development and leadership, creative thinking, strategy, and management skills.
