Community Foundation Update (10/31/15)
Alaska
The Alaska Community Foundation has announced thirteen grants totaling $164,000 to nonprofit organizations working to meet basic needs in ten communities. Awarded through the pooled resources of several unrestricted and field-of-interest funds at the foundation, the grants will help provide safe homes for women at risk, meals for seniors, shelter for homeless individuals, and support for victims of sexual violence and assault.
California
The California Community Foundation has announced twenty-two grants totaling $2 million to nonprofits working to improve the quality of life in Los Angeles County. Grants were awarded in the areas of the arts, civic engagement, education, health, housing and economic opportunity, and immigrant integration, as well as through the foundation's Los Angeles Scholars Investment Fund and Opportunity Fund.
Massachusetts
The Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Peter Taylor as president, effective January 2016. Taylor, who will succeed Jennifer Dowley, currently serves as vice president of program development and grantmaking services at the Maine Community Foundation.
Michigan
The Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, in partnership with Americans for the Arts and the Arts Alliance, has issued a report which finds that nonprofit arts and cultural activities and events generate $100 million annually in economic impact for the greater Ann Arbor area. Based on a survey of eighty-seven nonprofits and their audiences, 1.78 million event attendees in 2014 spent an estimated $50 million in addition to the cost of event admissions, while the sector itself accounted for 2,574 full-time equivalent jobs and generated $66.5 million in household income for local residents.
The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has announced grants totaling more than $7.5 million in areas ranging from the arts, culture, and recreation to health and human services and economic development. Recipients include the Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan, the Historic Elmwood Foundation, and InsideOut Literary Arts.
North Dakota
With the goal of creating lasting change in Williams, Divide, and McKenzie counties, the Northwest North Dakota Community Foundation has been established in Williston with a lead gift of $50,000 from local developer George Gaukler. "The communities of our three-county service area have been experiencing a vast growth of needs in the last few years," said board president Ward Koeser. "The Northwest North Dakota Community Foundation is now available as a vehicle for individuals to provide resources to meet these needs while taking advantage of great tax incentives."
Texas
The San Angelo Area Foundation has announced a $2 million grant from an anonymous donor to the Fort Concho Foundation. The funds will be used to reconstruct 1870s-era barracks and mess halls at the site, with the interiors to be adapted to house a large research and special book collection focused on military history.
Washington
The Seattle Foundation has announced grants totaling $1.3 million to ninety-six nonprofit organizations through its GiveTogether program. Grants were awarded in support of efforts to reduce homelessness, support living-wage careers, expand out-of-school-time learning opportunities, address climate change, prioritize mental health, and integrate immigrant and refugee communities, among other activities.
