Alabama

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced the election of Stewart Dansby, Dave Gray, and Gen. Charles Krulak to its board. Dansby chairs the Society of International Business Fellows and is a board member of the Susan Mott Webb Charitable Trust. Gray is president and CEO of Daxko, a provider of software and services for progressive member-based organizations. And Krulak served as the thirty-first commandant of the Marine Corps, was a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and is a former vice chair of MBNA America Bank and former president of Birmingham-Southern College. The foundation also announced grants totaling $1.2 million to twenty-nine nonprofit organizations working to improve the economic security of families and develop sustainable, livable communities in Jefferson, Blount, Shelby, St. Clair, and Walker counties.

Delaware

The Delaware Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Stuart Comstock-Gay as president and CEO, effective February 2016. Currently president and CEO of the Vermont Community Foundation, Comstock-Gay will succeed Fred C. Sears II, who is retiring at the end of December after thirteen years of service.

Georgia

The Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley in Columbus has surpassed the $100 million milestone in total grantmaking, WRBL reports. The grant that pushed the foundation, which was established in 1998, over the $100 million mark — one of more than a hundred checks totaling $620,000 sent out last week — was awarded from the Thad and Allison Estes Fund to the PAWS Humane animal shelter.

Kansas

The Wichita Community Foundation has announced five grants totaling $233,590 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Fund at WCF, which invests in innovators and ideas that help the city attract and retain talent, expand economic opportunity, and create a culture of civic engagement. The recipients are Arts Council, Inc., the SoCe Neighborhood Action Foundation, the Wichita Educational Foundation, Wichita Festivals, Inc., and the Wichita State University Foundation.

Massachusetts

Craig Dutra, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, will step down at the end of January but will continue to serve as senior advisor to the board, the Standard-Times reports. Since Dutra took the helm in 2004, the New Bedford-based foundation's total assets have increased from $5.5 million to $33.5 million, while the number of funds it administers has quadrupled to more than two hundred and twenty-five, and it has distributed more than $20 million in grants and scholarships.

Michigan

The Kalamazoo Community Foundation has been awarded the Exemplary Foundation Award by the Association of Fundraising Professionals West Michigan Chapter for its "unique and thoughtful assessment of each grant proposal and serving our community through leadership and stewardship of resources that last forever."

Minnesota

The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation has announced the launch of a three-year initiative to address the "opportunity gap" in the Twin Ports by supporting work aimed at improving parenting, education, and community connections for poor children and families. Funded by a $1.5 million grant from the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation, the initiative will work to better understand how the opportunity gap plays out in the area, seek effective remedies, and provide funding for efforts aimed at narrowing it.

Pennsylvania

The Erie Community Foundation has announced a gift of $10 million from Thomas B. Hagen on behalf of the Hagen family to establish the Susan Hirt Hagen Fund for Transformational Philanthropy. Named for the community leader, philanthropist, and foundation trustee who died last June, the fund will focus on efforts to improve the quality of life and well-being of individuals, groups, and communities in Erie County.

The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that its Critical Needs Alert campaign raised more than $1 million to reduce homelessness in just four hours. Matched on a 1:1 basis by the foundation's $500,000 match pool, donations will be distributed among forty local nonprofits that offer emergency shelter, temporary housing, and employment assistance to homeless children, youth, adults, and families in the region.

Rhode Island

In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of its founding, the Rhode Island Foundation has announced the details of a $10 million campaign to restore Roger Williams Park in Providence. The work will include improvements to the park's entrances, expanded walkways and bicycle paths, and repairs to the Museum of Natural History, the Bandstand, the Casino, and the Temple to Music.
