Connecticut

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced grants totaling more than $493,000 to Bloomfield Public Schools ($205,345) and Boys and Girls Clubs of Hartford ($288,000) in support of extended learning day opportunities in Bloomfield. The effort to develop and implement the community’s extended learning program has been led by a steering committee consisting of central office leadership, seven parent representatives (one from each BPS parent teacher organization), school administrators and teachers, a member of the Bloomfield board of education, and an afterschool program partner. The district also provided stakeholder training and embraced a program development strategy that for the first time included parent forums.

Massachusetts

The Cape Cod Foundation has announced that it awarded more than $2.9 million in grants and scholarships in 2016. The total includes $780,000 in scholarship support to students on the cape or islands in partnership with the foundation’s supporting organization, the Cape Cod Association. Distributions also included investments in local nonprofits working in the areas of health and human services, education, arts and culture, the environment, community and economic development, housing, and children, youth, and families.

The Boston Foundation has announced that Barry Bluestone, founding director of the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University, has joined the foundation as a senior fellow. Highly regarded for his efforts in the areas of public policy, housing, and urban development, Bluestone is the principal author of the foundation’s annual Greater Boston Housing Report Card, which he will continue to write.

Michigan

The Kalamazoo Community Foundation has announced that Dr. Mae Jemison, the first woman of color to travel into space as an astronaut, will be the keynote speaker at its community meeting on March 23. At the meeting, Jemison will recount her inspirational story and talk about the importance of STEM education, especially for girls and people of color.

New Hampshire

The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation has announced that its Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund has awarded six grants totaling $612,000 in support of STEM education and community revitalization. Established in 2006 to provide support for organizations in the state’s rural northern region and southern Quebec, the fund awarded grants ranging from $50,000 to $222,074 to the Carsey School of Public Policy, the Family Resource Center, the New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism, the Vermont Energy Education Program, and the Village of Saint-Venant-de-Paquette.

Ohio

The Dayton Foundation has named Craig J. Brown as the chair of its governing board and appointed Thomas J. Becker and George E. Forest to the board.

South Carolina

The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry on Hilton Head Island has announced that it is accepting applications for scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year. Last year, the foundation awarded more than $670,000 in scholarships, and it anticipates awarding a similar amount from the fifty-five scholarship programs it offers in 2017.

Vermont

The Vermont Community Foundation has announced that it will award grants of up to $5,000 in support of the creation and presentation of new work by Vermont artists and arts organizations. Awarded through the Vermont Arts Endowment Fund, grants typically are made in the fields of dance; theater; music composition and performance; creative writing, including poetry, short stories, novels, and plays; sculpture; painting; photography; and film -- although work in other media may also be considered.

Wisconsin

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced that it awarded more than $60 million in grants during 2016. Priority funding areas included community development ($21.5 million), education ($8.3 million), human services ($4.6 million), health ($6.4 million), and arts and culture ($5.5 million).

The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation has nameded Dennis Buehler as its new president and CEO.
