Arizona

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Straight Alliance Fund, a fund of the Tucson-based Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, has announced fifteen grants totaling $53,200 to eleven regional nonprofit agencies through its 2016 competitive grant cycle. Recipients include Bisbee Pride, Camp Born This Way, El Rio Foundation, KXCI Community Radio, Mariposas Sin Fronteras, Pima Council on Aging, Southern Arizona Gender Alliance, Tucson Jewish Film Festival, UA-Office of LGBTQ Affairs, and Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation.

California

The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of the San Diego Foundation, has announced grants totaling $70,000 in support of programs and services that promote healthy lifestyles. Recipients include Interfaith Community Services ($20,000); the Museum of Making Music ($20,000); the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad ($7,500); Champions for Health ($7,500); Meals on Wheels Greater San Diego, Inc. ($7,500); and Trauma Intervention Programs of San Diego, Inc. ($7,500).

A survey from the San Francisco Foundation finds that despite a high level of cynicism about politics and the political process, Bay Area residents still have hope for greater racial and economic inclusion. Respondents overwhelmingly acknowledged the shared role that government, business, and the nonprofit community can play in addressing issues such as quality job creation, affordable housing, public transportation, and ensuring opportunity for people regardless of race. A significant majority of survey respondents also called on political leaders to generate results, even if it means making compromises.

Illinois

The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley in Aurora has announced a grant of $9,000 to renovate an existing structure into an open-air gazebo at the Presence Fox Knolls senior living campus. Construction, which is scheduled to begin in July, will include remodeling of the existing enclosed structure into an inviting, open-air gazebo that is used for planned and impromptu events.

Massachusetts

The Boston Foundation has announced the promotion of Keith A. Mahoney to vice president of communications and public affairs, effective July 1. In addition to his responsibilities as senior director of public affairs, Mahoney had been serving in that role on an interim basis since February.

The Cape Cod Foundation has elected Ramani Ayer, former chair and CEO of The Hartford insurance company, to a four-year term on its board of directors.

Michigan

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has announced grants totaling $60,000 in support of LGBT-related programs through the HOPE Fund. Since 1994, the fund has worked to strengthen organizations serving LGBT individuals and families through targeted grantmaking, projects, and technical assistance.

Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Foundation has announced seed funding grants totaling more than $480,000 in in support of twenty promising medical research projects. Recipients include Brown University, which was awarded give grants totaling $125,000 in support of research on autism, stem cells, and stroke and other topics; the Ocean State Research Institute, which will receive $24,758 for a project entitled "Magnesium Supplementation for Primary Prevention of Heart Failure in Obesity"; and the Women & Infants Hospital, which was awarded $24,598 for a pilot study on the effects of administering metformin to post-partum women at risk for diabetes mellitus.

Vermont

The Vermont Community Foundation has named Dan Smith as its president and CEO. Smith, currently president of Vermont Technical College, previously worked as an attorney.

Virginia

The Charlottesville Area Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $569,422 to sixty-seven nonprofits through the Bama Works Fund. Established in 1998 by the Dave Matthews Band, the fund awards grants to organizations in Charlottesville and the seven surrounding counties working to support youth and vulnerable populations, protect the natural environment, build community facilities, and strengthen arts and cultural assets.
