Cristo Rey San José Jesuit High School Receives $10 Million Gift
Cristo Rey San José Jesuit High School in San Jose, California, has announced a $10 million endowment gift from George and Judy Marcus.
A Catholic college preparatory school established in 2013 for students from underserved communities in East San Jose, Cristo Rey San José is supported by individual donors, foundations, and the school's Corporate Work Study Program, a yearlong internship in which students earn nearly half of their educational costs by working in entry-level positions at Silicon Valley corporations. Nearly all graduates (98 percent) of the school are on track to be the first in their families to attend and finish college. In recognition of its largest gift to date, the school will name the Center for Student Success in its Office of Guidance and Counseling after the Marcuses.
"The Marcus gift is transformational for Cristo Rey; establishment of the Cristo Rey endowment links our past, present, and future by allowing the school to look far ahead, knowing that resources for students will continue to be available," said the school's president, Margaret Higgins.
"Judy and I believe in the power of education, and it is our hope that this gift will inspire others to support Cristo Rey San José in its mission," said George Marcus, co-founder of Marcus & Millichap, a real estate investment firm. "Cristo Rey is providing an educational model that is focused on ending generational poverty, and we are delighted to invest in the school's future."
