Dartmouth receives $150 million bequest from Glenn and Barbara Britt

Dartmouth College has announced a bequest from the estate of Glenn Britt (’71, Tuck ’72), who had served as Time Warner Cable CEO, and his late wife, Barbara, totaling more than $150 million in support of scholarships for undergraduate students from middle-income families.

The gift, which will provide funding for both the college and its Tuck School of Business, is the largest bequest dedicated entirely to scholarships in the 255-year history of the college and the largest single outright gift in the history of the business school. Nearly three-quarters of the gift will enhance undergraduate financial aid awards, enabling the college to nearly double its current income threshold for a “zero parent contribution” for undergraduates, from those with an annual income of $65,000 with typical assets to $125,000. The remaining quarter of the gift will fund scholarships for Tuck students. The Britt Scholarship at the College and Britt Scholars at Tuck will be part of Dartmouth’s financial aid awards for the 2024-25 academic year.

Glenn Britt died in 2014, and Barbara Britt died this past August. While the exact size of their bequest will be known when their estate is fully settled, Dartmouth and Tuck are assured of receiving at least $150 million. A longtime donor to Dartmouth, Britt volunteered as an admissions ambassador and served on the Tuck board of advisors, and the couple established the Britt Impact Technology Series at the Glassmeyer/McNamee Center for Digital Strategies.

“We are proud of the racial, ethnic, and geographic diversity reflected in Dartmouth’s student body, but we want to do even more to attract a wider range of students from middle-income families,” said Dartmouth president Sian Leah Beilock. “By elevating the family contribution threshold to $125,000, we will not only be saying to them that a Dartmouth education is within reach; we will also be adding to the diversity of backgrounds and viewpoints of our students, an educational plus for everyone on campus.”
