Dartmouth Receives Two $10 Million Gifts From Alumni

Dartmouth College has announced gifts totaling $20 million from two alumni to establish programs aimed at engaging faculty and students in healthcare delivery and globalization issues.

Richard Levy ('60) and his wife, Sue, have pledged $10 million to support a faculty team in healthcare delivery science — part of the school's effort to transform health care in the United States by developing strategies to curb costs while ensuring high-quality care and access. Comprised of three faculty members with expertise in healthcare implementation science, the team will work to develop better strategies for understanding and improving healthcare delivery. A founding member of the advisory board of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, Dick Levy has served as CEO and chairman of Varian Medical Systems and chairman of Sutter Health.

"Dick and Sue Levy's gift will help us achieve our goal of making Dartmouth the preeminent academic institution leading the transformation of health care in the United States," said TDI director Elliott Fisher. "This is a major step forward that will have great impact across the institution, the nation, and the globe."

A second $10 million gift, from an anonymous alumnus, will support a faculty team focused on globalization and human well-being around the world, with the funds used to establish professorships in economics and government and at the Tuck School of Business. The funds also will support the team’s efforts to develop data, research, and analysis that informs elected officials, nongovernmental organizations, and others seeking innovative policies in areas such as rule of law and human rights.
