Deloitte awards $1 million for Trevor Project crisis counseling
Deloitte Health Equity Institute and Deloitte LLP have announced a two-year, $1 million grant to the Trevor Project in support of the LGBTQ mental health nonprofit’s crisis counseling services, Bloomberg reports.
The grant will help fund the Trevor Project’s web-based chat- and text-supported call services and bolster recruitment, training, and support for staff and volunteer counselors. The contribution comes amid a growing mental health crisis in the United States and increased legislative limitations on LGBTQ people across the country. A 2023 survey by the Trevor Project found that 41 percent of LGBTQ youth between the ages of 13 and 24 had “seriously considered” attempting suicide in the past year.
Jerry Bruno, a principal at Deloitte, told Bloomberg that identifying and addressing “disparities in healthcare systems, such as mental health support gaps,” and signaling to Deloitte employees a sense of belonging for LGBTQ employees and allies, are “an authentic commitment to our core values.”
“Not only do we need to be thinking about making sure that we have enough staff and volunteers to be crisis counselors for such a large volume of young people who are reaching out to us in record numbers at this time,” said Trevor Project corporate partnerships specialist Shira Kogan, “we also need to make sure that we are creating an environment at Trevor where our crisis counselors are adequately trained, supported, and getting a good experience.”
