Dollar General Literacy Foundation commits $9.2 million to literacy

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation announced a commitment of approximately $9.2 million in support of literacy efforts in the company’s homebase communities.

The commitment includes nearly $8.2 million in grants to assist family, adult, and summer literacy programs across the country. The commitment also features a $1 million grant to DonorsChoose to bolster a match program for book projects in recognition of Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, which took place this past week. In addition, Dollar General is offering a monthly in-store discount for teachers.

“Today’s announcement further demonstrates our commitment to serving teachers and students across the nation,” said Dollar General Literacy Foundation executive director Denine Torr. “The Dollar General Literacy Foundation believes everyone should have access to programs that help strengthen reading and build critical literacy skills, and teachers should have the tools needed for quality classroom instruction.”
