Don Jacobs Sr. Foundation Awards $10 Million to University of Kentucky
The University of Kentucky has announced a $10 million gift from the Don Jacobs Sr. Charitable Foundation in support of undergraduate science education.
The gift includes $8 million for an academic science building that will be renamed the Don & Cathy Jacobs Science Building. Recently opened, the 240,000-square-foot, $112 million building features state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced lecture halls, technology-enabled active learning (TEAL) classrooms, outdoor teaching spaces, and interior green space. The remaining $2 million will fund future investments in academic programming and research.
Don Jacobs, who died in April 2015, and his wife, Cathy, previously gave a gift to the university to establish the Don and Cathy Jacobs Executive Education Center at the Gatton College of Business and Economics and the Health Education Center at the UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital. They also have supported the Markey Cancer Center and College of Medicine. Their latest gift brings their total giving to the university to more than $20 million. Don Jacobs owned a car dealership business that spanned three states, while Cathy Jacobs founded and later sold a successful advertising agency.
"Don and I always believed that to whom much is given, much is required," said Cathy Jacobs. "I am grateful that we have been blessed so that we can help others."
