Doris Duke Charitable Foundation awards $10 million to restore theater

Contractors look at the blueprint of a new building.

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) has announced a gift of $10 million to help cover the restoration of the Doris Duke Theater on the Jacob’s Pillow campus in Becket, Massachusetts.

In 2020, the theater was destroyed in a fire, and restoration is projected to cost $30 million, the New York Times reports. As part of the restoration, which is slated to be complete by 2025, the theater will refocus on dance and technology by equipping the space with livestreaming technology and upgraded audio systems.

Pamela Tatge, the center’s executive and artistic director, told the Times that the aim was to create “a nimble, flexible space to incorporate the technologies of the future.”

“They’re not just building a theater,” DDCF president and CEO Sam Gill told the Times. “They are building and demonstrating to the field of dance the kinds of tools and expertise and capabilities that will be required to ensure that the digital future is one that is even brighter and even more inclusive and even more exciting for dance.”
