El Pomar Foundation Awards $1 Million for Basic Needs in Colorado
The El Pomar Foundation in Colorado Springs has awarded grants totaling $1 million to nonprofits that provide basic services such as food, clothing, and shelter to people in need as a result of tough economic times, the Pueblo Chieftain reports.
Through the newly established Colorado Assistance Fund, the foundation will give at least $250,000 to nonprofits in the Pikes Peak area and $50,000 to those in Pueblo County and nine rural regions of the state. The remaining $250,000 will be awarded based on needs. According to foundation chairman William Hybl, the funds must go directly to the individuals an organization serves and cannot be used to expand the nonprofit's services.
"We are keenly aware of the struggles facing so many Colorado residents as a result of the global financial crisis and hope the Colorado Assistance Fund will be a small step toward addressing the growing demand for services throughout the state," Hybl said. "As a foundation, our mission has always been to enhance the well-being of the people of Colorado. This fund represents our recognition that something must be done immediately to assist those Coloradans hurt most by the changing economic times."
