In 2021, Elon Musk donated $5.7 billion worth of Tesla Inc. shares to charity, according to a securities filing obtained Monday by the Wall Street Journal. 

While the filing doesn’t name the recipients of the shares, the donation was made over the course of more than one week in November and in the middle of a series of stock sales by Musk. In the According to the Journal, Musk sold more than $16 billion worth of Tesla shares in the final two months of 2021, and the charitable giving may have been intended to help offset the a large tax bill. 

According to a list of the top charitable givers last year in recently reported by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Musk’s donations would make him the second-biggest donor of 2021, after the $15 billion awarded by the now-divorced Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates.
