ExxonMobil Awards $5 Million for African Malaria Programs
ExxonMobil Corporation has announced twenty-four community grants totaling more than $5 million to help fight malaria in nine African countries through international programs promoting the research and development of new medicines and advocating for international change and support.
The ExxonMobil Africa Health Initiative was established in 2000 to support and fund activities related to the prevention, control, and treatment of malaria, which every year afflicts at least 300 million people globally, resulting in more than a million deaths. Nine out of ten malaria deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa, mostly in young children and pregnant women.
"Africa is a significant and growing contributor to the world's energy economy, but diseases like malaria continue to wreak havoc on the health of African people," said ExxonMobil president Rex Tillerson. "Through our Africa Health Initiative, we are working to support governments and healthcare providers to reduce the impact of this devastating disease."
