The UK-based Gates Cambridge Trust has announced the 2023 class of Gates Cambridge Scholars.

This year’s cohort of 77 scholars includes 44 women and 33 men from 32 countries who will pursue graduate studies at the University of Cambridge, exploring subjects such as the links between sleep patterns and the retrieval of emotional memories as well as what we can learn about biodiversity from burying beetles. Recipients include Katherine Enright (MPhil, digital humanities), who aims to create a database that brings together disparate archival sources on Southeast Asian natural history and its key people and institutions; Willa Lane (PhD, psychology), who will research embodied cognition—the intricate link between mind and body—in cuttlefish; Olabimpe Olayinka (PhD, pharmacology), who aims to develop affordable and effective targeted therapies for treating BRCA-mutant cancers; and Christopher Slaughter (PhD, engineering), who will explore the fabrication of a point-of-care technology for screening, diagnosing, and tracking neuromuscular disease progression.

Established in 2001 with a $210 million donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the university’s flagship international postgraduate scholarship program has awarded 2,100 scholarships to students from 112 countries.
