The Gilead Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Gilead Sciences, has announced a $1 million gift for on-the-ground relief efforts in Turkey and Syria following the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in February.

The gift will be divided evenly between the International Medical Corps and Direct Relief. More than 52,000 people were killed in the disaster in southern Turkey and northwestern Syria. The United Nations Development Program recently announced that the estimated damages exceed $100 billion.

Major funders have responded to the disaster, including the World Bank, Turkish Philanthropy Funds, and the Turkish Red Crescent. While relief organizations have been making their way through Turkey, the process has been slow in Syria, where civil war has been active since 2011.
