Giving in Connecticut Totaled $4.66 Billion in 2013, Report Finds
Individuals and foundations in Connecticut made $4.66 billion in charitable contributions in 2013, a report from the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy finds.
According to the report, Giving in Connecticut 2015 (27 pages, PDF), total giving in the state increased 0.7 percent in 2013 on a year-over-year basis; gifts from individuals excluding bequests fell 3.3 percent, to $3.3 billion; and bequests jumped 77.2 percent, to $352 million. Connecticut residents with annual incomes between $50,000 and $250,000 accounted for two-thirds of the total number of returns reporting contributions and 28.3 percent of the total dollar value of those returns, with an average contribution per return of $2,163, while Nutmeggers with annual incomes of at least $200,000 accounted for 17.2 percent of the total number and two-thirds of the total dollar value of returns reporting contributions, with an average contribution per return of $21,099.
The report also found that total grantmaking by foundations in Connecticut fell 1 percent in 2013, to $999 million, even as their assets grew 22.6 percent, to $10.9 billion. In contrast to the general trend, giving by community foundations steadily increased, from $59 million in 2009 to $86.9 million in 2013. And while there were more than sixteen hundred active grantmaking foundations in the state, the top five accounted for 41.3 percent of all grants awarded in 2013. In terms of issue area, 21.9 percent of the total number of grants were awarded in the area of human services, followed by education (19.4 percent) and health (13.1 percent), while nearly 26 percent of total grant dollars were awarded to education, followed by health (22.9 percent) and philanthropy/nonprofit management (16 percent).
