Giving Local Campaigns Raise More Than $50 Million in 24 Hours
Community foundations around the country received more than 306,000 gifts and raised over $53 million during 24-hour giving campaigns on Tuesday, Give Local America reports.
More than seven thousand nonprofits in one hundred and twenty communities nationwide took part in the campaign, which was designed to celebrate one hundred years of local philanthropy by community foundations, the NonProfit Times reports. Multimillion-dollar efforts included the GiveBIG campaign administered by the Seattle Foundation, which raised $12.8 million from more than 64,000 gifts; the Pittsburgh Foundation's Pittsburgh Gives campaign ($5.2 million); Lift the Lowcountry, led by the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina in Charleston (nearly $2.5 million); and Give Local Louisville, led by the Community Foundation of Louisville (nearly $1.9 million).
Not all communities were as active, with as many as two dozen regions raising less than $100,000. And in some communities, the day-long campaigns were extended to thirty-six hours. In contrast, Giving Tuesday, held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, raised approximately $33 million in 2013, NPT reports.
