Good Food Innovation Fund awards $1 million for nutritious food

The Good Food Innovation Fund (GFIF) has announced seven grants totaling more than $1 million in support of small and midsize businesses working to make nutritious food affordable and available to low-income communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

Awarded through its initial call for applications, grants will support selected businesses working to promote nutritious, regenerative, and equitably produced and distributed food through schools and other institutional feeding programs. Selected businesses will each receive between $100,000 and $200,000, as well as technical assistance to expand their operations. Recipients include Fibered Fresh Partners, Keep It Cool, Sanku Kenya Ltd., Shalem Investments, and Smart Logistics Solutions in Kenya; and Agri Farmer Centre Ltd. (Agriface) and Muteesa Company Ltd. in Rwanda.

GFIF was launched in 2021 with a $5 million grant from the Rockefeller Foundation and is managed by Intellecap Advisory Services.

“African businesses have a vital role to play in making sure that people, especially in low-income communities, have access to nutritious and affordable food,” said Rockefeller Foundation vice president Mehrdad Ehsani. “Supporting them will improve efficiencies along the food supply chain, reduce the cost of production, increase their competitiveness, and enable them to reach to low-income populations with nutritious food.”
