Google.org awards $3.5 million for tech workforce in New York City
Google.org has announced three grants totaling $3.5 million in support of New York City's tech workforce.
Grants recipients include Pursuit, which was awarded $2 million in support of its efforts to create economic opportunity for adults from low-income communities by teaching them to code and build a career in technology; ExpandEd Schools, which will receive $1 million in support of its Pathways Fellowship Computer Science (CS) track, a ten-month afterschool teaching practicum for aspiring teachers of color; and Computer Science 4 All (CS4All), which was awarded $500,000 in support of the CS Leads program, a comprehensive leadership training program for teachers focused on equity in CS education, peer coaching, and in-school leadership.
"Supporting organizations like these are especially important as the COVID-19 pandemic has unearthed unsettling truths about equity and access to resources, especially in underserved communities of color," wrote Ben Fried, Google's chief information officer and New York site lead. "As we navigate the short- and long-term effects of the pandemic, we must come together to create equitable solutions that meet the needs of the moment and provide a strong foundation for the future."
