Harkness Foundation for Dance Awards $5 Million to Five Organizations
The Harkness Foundation for Dance has announced grants totaling $5 million to five New York City organizations, Broadway World reports.
Grants of $1 million each will be awarded over the next decade to the Brooklyn Academy of Music in support of dance productions at BAM's three theaters and an annual Harkness Dance Residency; the Joyce Theater, which will use the funds to inaugurate a performance series dedicated to the late Theodore S. Bartwink, the foundation's former executive director and a Harkness and Joyce trustee; and New York City Center, which will use the funds to complete renovations on its three studios and create a Harkness Fund for Dance.
Grants also were awarded to the 92nd Street Y, where the Harkness Dance Center will expand its educational and presenting programs and establish a residency program for a mid-career artist, a legacy company, and an emerging artist; and NYU Langone Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases, which houses the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries, to fund a boardroom named for William A. Perlmuth, the foundation's board chair and former chair of the hospital, that will function as a central education and networking hub for orthopedic residents in dance-specific surgical techniques.
